Today marks the halfway point in Trans Awareness Week, which will end on Friday with the Transgender Day of Remembrance. For healthcare professionals, it is vital to have an understanding of the extreme barriers to healthcare and the increased risk of violence against their persons that the Trans community experience. 2020 has seen a sharp rise in attacks against Trans persons, and those in the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Persons of Color) community are at an even higher risk of being attacked or murdered. As the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) states, "Anti-transgender stigma, denial of opportunity and increased risk factors compound to create a culture of violence," and so we must all actively work to dismantle these stigmas and barriers within the health professions. You can find more information in the HRC "Dismantling a Culture of Violence" report.

We also must be aware of the barriers that our Trans colleagues, students, and fellow Lobos endure and have to work through on a daily basis. These members of our community might be dealing with the stressors from the above mentioned issues as well as other barriers to housing, discriminatory laws, and systematic oppression. We do not learn or practice in a vacuum and the toll these mechanisms of discrimination can have in our daily practice are important to understand and meet with empathy and action. Here in the Library, many of us have taken the Safe Zone Training and more are working towards receiving this training, and we want our Trans community to know that we will do everything we can to assist you in your learning goals within a safe space.

So, let's all take some time this week to learn more with the resources we link to throughout this post and also to the list we will provide below. There are events taking place here at UNM through the LGBTQ Resource Center and through other avenues like the HRC.
