As the BioMISS season 17 premier, Mr. Verma’s talk will cover the difference between misinformation and disinformation; describe Ocularcentrism as a dependence upon sight and vision leading to the development of technologies like photography; explain how disinformation campaigns use deepfakes; and outline the history of visual representation and photo manipulation such as deepfakes.
Brief presentation description: Deepfakes threaten to greatly disrupt public trust in mass media, public institutions, and international peace. This talk traces the ocularcentric bias (privileging and sight of vision) of culture to understand the biological and technological antecedents of this threat.
