“Sweeping in scope yet intimately compelling.” - Science

“By the end of the movie, we are all forced to confront our own inner prejudices and to accept that the only way forward towards equality is through transparency and data.”  - Hammer to Nail

The much-anticipated film, Picture a Scientist, is now available to the UNM HSC community and will be part of the HSLIC's collection of educational films. The film chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Watch the trailer / Watch the film.

Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries - including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists - who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

Picture a Scientist is part of UNM HSC’s month-long celebration of Women’s History.  Along with viewing the film, we invite the HSC community to join us in a candid conversation on advancing diversity and inclusion in STEM with Nobel Prize-winning Dr. Jennifer Doudna and other world-renowned scientists, who are featured in the film.  The conversation will be March 24, 1:00 p.m. MT (75 minutes), and is sponsored by ProQuest, Scientific American, ro*co films, and FILM PLATFORM.  Registration is required. Join the conversation.
