Image of a girl looking downtrodden with the text 'moving beyond impostor syndrome'

Join us Thursday, March 4th from 12-1pm in our Moving Beyond Impostor Syndrome Workshop. You can register on our events calendar here.

Impostor syndrome is the inability to see one’s own successes as legitimately deserved despite all evidence to the contrary. While impostor syndrome is a common experience among adults, how are feelings of impostorism different from experiences of othering, minority status stress, or perceived discrimination? In this workshop, we will discuss impostor syndrome, the mediated effects of marginalization and discrimination, and ways to manage both.

This workshop will be presented by Kelleen Maluski, Student Success and Engagement Librarian, and Stephanie Sanchez, Associate Director of the Center for Teaching & Learning. After registering you will be sent a Zoom link closer to the date of the workshop. If you have questions or comments please let Kelleen Maluski know.

We're now into the second month of 2021, and what a year it has been! Since I started in my new role as Executive Director for HSLIC on January 1, we've seen a world under continued strain, but also rays of hope, especially as vaccination rates climb.

As HSLIC, we're also hopeful. We are currently planning for what a phased, safe, and healthy reopening of our physical spaces might look like. Though in the past, HSLIC has been as much a social hub as a study space, we are focusing on students' primary need: quiet, individual study space. As we finalize our plans and roll them out, we'll be sharing the details.

Another thing that keeps us hopeful are our plans to make HSLIC available 24x7 to all UNM HSC students. The final construction projects that will enable 24x7 to happen are underway, and we're looking forward to having this highly anticipated service available later this spring.

As the new Executive Director, I'm focusing on HSLIC's immediate future and its long-term role within the Health Sciences Center. One thing that's really important to me is our role in creating welcoming, inclusive, and accessible spaces and opportunities for all members of our diverse community. Whether it's hosting events and discussions, sharing resources, or participating in campus diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and accessibility initiatives, I believe we have a special role to fill. I'm proud to join my HSLIC colleagues already deeply engaged in this work, whether it's reimagining our Native Health Database, partnering with White Coats for Black & Indigenous Lives to preserve their work, or creating resource guides to help providers and community members find information on LGBTQ+ health. I look forward to seeing how we can continue to improve, grow, and partner with our communities in these efforts.

Be well, stay safe, and keep learning!

Melissa Rethlefsen, HSLIC Executive Director

Illustration of Angela Davis with the quote 'Our histories never unfold in isolation. We cannot truly tell what we consider to be our own histories without knowing the other stories. And often we discover that those other stories are actually our own stories.' from Freedom Is a Constant Struggle: Ferguson, Palestine, and the Foundations of a Movement

As we begin Black History Month, we must understand that the celebration and recognition of Black culture and contributions should not be relegated to only a month. We must work to question the way history, and especially the history of the health sciences, is discussed and who is the focus of that narrative every day. It’s just as important that we center the joy and expertise of our Black colleagues and community members. So, I invite you in joining me in signing up for 28 Days of Black History, created by Anti-Racism Daily here (Day 1 covers the Tuskegee Syphilis Study and features artwork that centers the voices of the men who were exploited and experimented on in the name of “science”).  Also, don’t forget to check out the events taking place at UNM HSC and read “Why We Celebrate Black History” and connect to the events linked there through UNM’s Africana Studies. You can also further celebrate accomplishments of Black Americans with Profiles in Perseverance, where they will highlight a new figure every day and with DECADES: Past, Present, Future from the New Mexico Black Leadership Council.
