Pumpkin Pi!

March 14th: Founded as Pi Day in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw and declared a National holiday in 2009. Yes, Pi is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, which is revered for its infinite digits and now utilized as a day to increase awareness in math and science disciplines. However, this year on March 14th, HSLIC faculty and staff joined forces with members of the Health Sciences Center's Chief Information Office/IT Support in celebration of Pi Day and to create an opportunity for employee wellness.
Since there is no
one-size-fits-all approach to employee wellness, it’s important to intercept workaholic tendencies in order to avoid complacency, silos or becoming overwhelmed. So this year, our team harnessed Pi Day as a way to get engaged by supporting the creative art of pie making and incorporating fun into the midst of our daily routines. While pie may not count as “brain food,” one could tell from the abundance of smiles and laughter that this gathering surely cultivated a serotonin boost for those in attendance.

Coupled with HSLIC’s initiative to bolster student wellness (https://libguides.health.unm.edu/blog/Why-Wellness-Matters-in-an-Academic-Library), we as faculty and staff recognize the importance of self-care. For that reason, from our team to fellow life-long learners that are a part of the Health Sciences Library family, please don’t hesitate to reach out for ideas on how to power through those inevitable mental plateaus, or if you’d simply like to talk about everyone’s favorite never-ending number as a study break.
