Images of a person in a meeting, books, a computer with an graph going up, a heart and medical cross, and a person doing yoga that says Time Management as Self-Care

It’s that time of year when we can really start to feel overwhelmed by our work, school, and life responsibilities. Take a moment for yourself and come learn about time management skills to help you reach your goals, whatever they may be. Time management is not one-size-fits-all and can take practice to develop, so we’ll explore what might help you best and places where you can start implementing new techniques.

You can find all our workshops and register on the HSLIC Events Calendar. Registration is required to attend and all registrants will be sent a Zoom link previous to the class. If you have questions or want to schedule a workshop for another time or for your class please reach out to Kelleen Maluski, Student Success and Engagement Librarian.

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month and to recognize our rich Hispanic culture in New Mexico and at the UNM Health Sciences campus, HSLIC has created the Curanderas y Parteras: Una Celebracion de los Curanderos de Nuevo Mexico (A Celebration of Healers in New Mexico) display.  The physical display will run from September 15 – October 15 and is available in the lobby of HSLIC.  The virtual exhibit can be accessed on our Virtual Exhibits Guide.

Every day should be a celebration of our healers, but special awareness should be given to las curanderas y las parteras, the traditional healers and midwives in Hispanic culture.  Curanderismo is rooted in strong religious beliefs of harmony with nature, spirit, and self.  There is an emphasis on one's overall health with a focus on personal relationships and nutrition.  While curanderismo is still practiced today, it has also influenced modern healthcare especially in New Mexico.  The resources provided on the display will provide a glimpse into the history of las curanderas y las parteras as well as provide a look into its modern practice and influence on mainstream healthcare.

When a loved one is in crisis, there are sometimes warning signs that others can pick up and act upon. The University of New Mexico and UNM Health Sciences Center Wellbeing Coalition aims to spread awareness of those warning signs and help prevent suicide as part of Suicide Awareness Week.

UNM also hopes to reduce the stigma around suicide and encourage those struggling to seek help when needed. It’s part of the focus of the weeklong activities scheduled for Sept. 12-18.

As part of the network of UNM Resource Centers, the UNM Agora Crisis Center is now part of The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and has almost 150 student volunteers who help run the hotline. Additional mental health resources can be found by visiting the UNM Mental Health Resources page.
