Open Data Repositories

About this Guide

Datasets are becoming more readily available as scholarly outputs due to funding requirements and the changing landscape of open science. With more data freely available, it is becoming more difficult to locate relevant open data repositories and datasets. This guide provides suggestions of reliable open data repositories in hope of streamlining search processes, preventing duplication of efforts, and promoting open access resources.

The repositories are listed by topic in alphabetical order. Click on the "Open Data by Topic" tab on the left hand-side to see a list of topics. The repositories are currently only listed under one topic, the topic we felt it was most "about".

Open Data Repository Selection

Repositories listed must:

  • Provide open access data that can be downloaded, manipulated, and analyzed
  • May include controlled open data (available upon request)
  • Preferably host datasets (not just data tools or visualizations)
  • Be sustainable (e.g., no reliance on user donations for basic operations)
  • Offer user support (e.g., guides, FAQs, community forums)
  • Clearly state the scope of datasets included

This list is not exhaustive. Please feel free to suggest other open data repositories that you feel should be considered. Please also keep in mind that not all data included in these repositories are open. Some repositories include a mixture of controlled and open data, which is not always apparent until the dataset is accessed.

Repository Evaluation Rubric

The below rubric was used to determine if open data repositories met the above mentioned criteria. A team of 4 then evaluated the repositories that had been suggested by members of HSLIC.

Scope & Relevance

  • Is the repository within the scope of HSLIC’s collection?
  • Does the repository clearly state the scope of its datasets?

Data Accessibility

  • Can at least some data be downloaded for analysis?

User Support

  • Is a User Guide or help documentation available?

Data Submission (if applicable)

  • Are there clear guidelines for submitting data?

Credibility & Source Transparency

  • Is the data from credible or reliable sources?
  • Is it clear who is allowed to upload data?
  • Is creator/author information included in the metadata?

Metadata Quality

  • Is the metadata sufficient to support reuse of the dataset?

If the answer was "no" to any of the questions, the repository was not added to the list.

Maintenance

This list will be evaluated for broken links every 3 months starting September 2025.
