October is National Medical Librarian Month: Recognizing the Impact of Clinical Librarians

The concept of the Clinical Librarians originated in the United States during the 1970s. Clinical Librarian services provide quality-assured information to health professionals at the point of care to support clinical decision making. This is achieved through outreach and literature searching services to clinical teams, along with support in training, education, and journal clubs.1

Research indicates that timely information provided by Clinical Librarians has contributed to positive outcomes such as improved quality of life for patients, increased patient involvement in decision making, and a reduction in unnecessary tests, referrals and readmissions. 2

A UK survey published in 2020 demonstrates a wide range of impacts attributable to Clinical Librarian services. The survey reveals that the most significant impacts of Clinical Librarian services are keeping users informed about current developments, promoting personal research interests, and ensuring interventions are based on best practices and current evidence. Furthermore, clinical staff reported that Clinical Librarian services save time and have become essential team members. These services enable clinicians to stay updated on the latest research findings, obtain timely and high-quality evidence to answer clinical questions, and share search skills with the team. The contribution to research was particularly noted in relation to conducting searches for systematic reviews, assisting with bids for funding, and searching the literature for peer-reviewed papers. Notably, including the work of Clinical Librarians in publications added weight and value to the research.1

Clinical Librarians play a vital role in healthcare by enhancing clinical decision-making and supporting research, leading to better patient outcomes and increased efficiency.

As we celebrate their contributions, let's explore how HSLIC leverages this expertise to assist healthcare professionals. HSLIC offers the following comprehensive Clinical Librarian services:
