Construction begins March 3rd on a new, single-occupant, universal restroom across from the vending machines on the library’s main floor. This publicly accessible restroom will be equipped with an accessible toilet; grab bars; accessible sink, soap, and paper towel dispenser; diaper changing station; and a motor-operated lift. At almost 10 feet square, the space will be large enough for motorized wheelchairs to maneuver around and for parents with small children.

The project is expected to take 5-6 weeks, and we hope to have it open by the end of April. During construction, access to the women’s restroom across the hall will be through the hallway next to the student computing area, and there may be noise on the library's main floor and directly above the site. If you have questions about this project, please contact Sally Bowler-Hill, Manager of Administrative Operations (sbowler-hill@salud.unm.edu).

Zoe Johnson is a Student Assistant who has been working at the library for about a month and is majoring in Exercise Science. Her goal after graduation is to attend a Physician’s Assistant Program.

Zoe’s favorite things to do at HSLIC include helping library users, cleaning the white boards, computer keyboards and mice. She also enjoys organizing the lost and found and chargers at the front desk.  An interesting fact about Zoe is that she has a cadaver tendon in her knee. Maybe you can ask her about the back story on that when you see her.

One accomplishment Zoe is especially proud of is making the Dean’s List. When she is not studying, she enjoys working out, listening to music, and spending time with friends. She also has two dogs named Tux and Mara, and her favorite food is Pad Thai.

Topic: Cross-Sectional Study of UpToDate versus DynaMed

Description: Health Sciences Libraries are often faced with difficult budget decisions regarding which clinical tools to purchase while keeping in mind user preferences and needs. Our research study was designed to inform evidence-based decision-making around this issue. We designed and executed a cross-sectional research project which compared the speed and accuracy of two popular point-of-care information tools: UpToDate and DynaMed plus. We will share the results of our research, including a behind-the-scenes glimpse into our research process.

Learning Objectives

We will discuss:

  • how to form research objectives from collections priorities
  • how to balance multiple priorities and changing roles while conducting research
  • how to work with busy medical residents as study participants

HSLIC is excited to announce its participation in the first annual UNM Big Give.

What is UNM Big Give?

UNM Big Give is 1889 minutes of giving that brings together faculty, staff, students, and UNM alumni and friends from across the globe to support a variety of academic, healthcare, athletic, cultural, and student programs that make up The University of New Mexico’s diverse community. UNM Big Give is about supporting departments in need through the participation of as many people as possible.

In honor of UNM’s founding year, the 1889 minutes will launch at 8:00am on February 28th, 2023. UNM Big Give concludes the following day, March 1st at 4:00pm.

UNM Big Give is a collaboration between all UNM campuses, UNM Foundation, UNM Health, and UNM Athletics.

What is the Goal of UNM Big Give?

This year, UNM Big Give is striving to receive 500 gifts during our 1889 minutes.

Why Give During UNM Big Give?

When our community, faculty, and staff come together during UNM Big Give, it’s unlike any other event. Challenges and matches offered by donors throughout UNM Big Give maximize your impact. Your gift, along with the collective support of your colleagues, unlocks vital dollars or could be matched dollar-for-dollar, supporting a place like the Health Sciences Library.

Topic: The Native Health Database in 2023: Embedding Outreach with Culturally-Respectful Technology

Description: The years 1993-2019 marked significant changes and modifications to the Native Health Database, a (then) abstracting database that provided unique health information and resources for myriad audiences. Between 2019 and 2022 the resource underwent significant changes, this time focused on the underlying platform delivering the information; the new NHD now has the capacity to elevate source Native American & Indigenous communities to equal partners in the exchange of information. In 2023, the NHD is poised to leverage this new platform and engage in focused outreach efforts to show content creators, communities, users, and healthcare providers how they can interact within the new platform.

Learning Objectives:

We will discuss:

  • How the past has informed the present and future of this resource
  • How the new platform provides solutions to information exchange that embodies the Indigenous Data Sovereignty movement
  • How the platform can be utilized broadly as an effective outreach tool for researchers

Join us for our fifth Book Tasting event on Thursday, February 15th from 4-5pm! These are a time for us to come together as a community as a different person each month reads an excerpt from a different book and facilitates discussions around it. This month Lindsay Smart, Associate Vice Chancellor for Leadership and Faculty Equity & Inclusion, will be reading from Admissions: A Memoir of Surviving Boarding School by Kendra James. As the University celebrates Black History Month discussions around stories like this are extremely important in order to better connect with the reality that history is living.

In this event we will be engaging with selections from Admissions: A Memoir of Surviving Boarding School while also considering the psychological costs to diverse students who enter environments in which they are perhaps “the only one”, constantly confronting their “innate otherness” in higher education spaces.

As an institution that is involved in the regular process of admitting health professions students, this book will lead us to considering the difference between being admitted vs being accepted and whether it is enough to be admitted into a higher education space if acceptance doesn’t follow. More information on this and past Book Tastings can be found on your Research Guide.

This is an online event and registration is required.  If you have any questions please reach out to Kelleen Maluski. You can also find more Black History Month events and information on the UNM HSC Black History Month page.
