As HSLIC’s Student Success and Engagement Librarian, Kelleen will present on Understanding Safiya Umoja Noble’s “Algorithms of Oppression” and Damage Inflicted by Database Biases

By attending this seminar, attendees will come away having a basic understanding of Safiya Umoja Noble’s work on the biases and isms that exist in algorithms that power resources like Google and academic databases. Participants will also work to evaluate how these biases and isms build on the dominant narrative that already exists in the health sciences, the academy, and society thus further perpetuating that narrative and white supremacy. Moreover, participants will gain perspective on how damaging taking these databases and content in them at “face value” can be to our research, practice, and learners - further othering disenfranchised and underrepresented patients, employees, and students.

The University of New Mexico School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This is the only BioMISS presentation in October, and none are scheduled for November. The next seminar is set for 12/3/2020, featuring Drs. Philip Kroth and Shamsi Berry. As always, stay tuned to the HSLIC Calendar for event details.
